WHAT IS KANAL ISTANBUL?

Kanal İstanbul is a waterway project planned to be built in İstanbul. In 2011, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's "crazy project" was reflected in the press; however, the name, content and location of the project have been kept confidential for a long time. On April 27, 2011, a press conference was held at Haliç Congress Center in Sütlüce, where basic information about the project was explained.

FEATURES OF CANAL ISTANBUL

According to the statements, the official name of the Kanal İstanbul, the city will be implemented on the European side. An artificial waterway will be opened between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea in order to ease ship traffic in the Bosporus, which is currently an alternative passage between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. At the point where the canal joins the Sea of Marmara, one of the two new cities will be established by 2023. The length of the canal is 40–45 km; width is 145-150 m on the surface and at the bottom it will be about 125 m. The depth of the water will be 25 m. With this canal, the Bosporus will be completely closed to tanker traffic and two new peninsulas and a new island will be formed in İstanbul.

The new city is planned to be established on 453 million square meters where Kanal İstanbul sits on 30 million square meters. Other areas are 78 million square meters of airport, 33 million square meters of Ispartakule

and Bahçeşehir, 108 million square meters of roads, 167 million square meters of zoning parcels and 37 million square meters are divided into common green areas.

ROUTE OF CANAL ISTANBUL

The project is 45 km long and 20.75 meters deep over Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Arnavutköy and Başakşehir. Approximately 275 million cubic meters of excavation will be made annually. The total amount of excavation from the channel was calculated as 1 billion 155 million 668 thousand cubic meters. 1 billion 79 million 252 thousand cubic meters of this amount of land excavation, 76 million 416 thousand cubic meters of sea and lake screening will constitute. 800 million cubic meters of the 1.1 billion cubic meters of excavation planned to be carried out on land along the channel will be carried out in the section connected to the Black Sea.

COST OF CANAL ISTANBUL

The project will last two years. The mined land will be used for the construction of a large airport and port, and will be used to fill quarries and closed mines. The project will cost $ 75 billion.

On 15 January 2018, the route of the project was announced. It was announced to the public by the Ministry of Transportation that the project will pass through Küçükçekmece Lake, Sazlısu Dam and Terkos Dam routes.

HOW LONG WILL THE CONSTRUCTION OF CANAL ISTANBUL PROCESS TAKE?

According to the latest EIA report prepared for Kanal İstanbul; The project is planned to be completed in 7 years.

CANAL ISTANBUL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES

As a result of the studies carried out within the scope of the operation (traffic) simulation and determination of the canal operation principle within the scope of Kanal İstanbul Project, it was decided to operate the canal one way. Within the scope of Kanal İstanbul Project; In the canal, emergency mooring areas, emergency response centers, canal entry and exit structures, infrastructure and superstructures such as ship traffic systems, port, logistics center, marina, coastal structures that will provide access across the channel at the required points, fortifications and coastal facilities such as landfills.

The projects to be developed as integrated with Kanal İstanbul Project are; Marmara and Black Sea Container Ports, Küçükçekmece Yacht Harbor and Black Sea coastal recreation fill and logistic area fill. Recreation and logistic area on the Black Sea coast will be made 54 million 605 thousand 865 square meters in total. The material will be used in the excavation.

Approximately 8-10 thousand people will be employed during the construction phase of the project and 500-800 people will be employed during the operation phase. The construction area, defined as the working area, was calculated to be approximately 63.2 million square meters. After the construction activities are completed, the area up to the canal structure approach limit will be 25.75 million square meters, which will be abandoned for other public needs. The area to be used for the canal was announced as 37.5 million square meters.
